How a tired web agency built its own escape hatch.
Three chapters. Ten years. One platform we now bet our entire business on.
Always Digital starts in a garage.
Alvin registers Always Digital Limited in Auckland and starts trading as HornTech — building WordPress sites for tradies, dentists, cafés. The agency model works, the software underneath does not. Every site needs babying. Plugins update overnight, layouts break Saturday morning, clients call Monday at 7am.
The day we stopped building WordPress.
After 8 years and ~120 client sites, we did the math. Each client was paying us, hosting, plugins, security, backups — averaging $267/mo just to keep an old WordPress running. Half our agency hours went to maintenance, not creation. We told the team: we're going to build a platform that makes us obsolete as a maintenance shop.
WebForger.ai goes live.
We migrate horntech.co.nz to our own product on day one. Then Apollo Energy. Then QEM. Then a Ponsonby café. Twelve months later: zero plugins to update, zero security patches, zero Saturday-morning panics. We open the platform to 50 founding members and write them three years free for stress-testing it with us.
