Squarespace Alternative

The Squarespace alternative
that is faster, and actually yours.

Squarespace gives you beautiful templates on a subscription you never stop paying, and in July 2026 it raised that subscription by up to 26 percent.
WebForger writes the copy, designs the layout and ships static HTML you own, faster and exportable. A one-off setup quoted to your scope, with your first year of hosting included.

Why people leave Squarespace

Squarespace is beautiful. It is also slow, rented, and locked.

Templates look great on the demo, then your real content makes them heavier. The subscription runs forever and it does not hold still: on July 17, 2026 Squarespace raised annual Core from $23 to $29 a month, a 26 percent jump, then emailed a correction a week later calling it an internal error. The template box limits your layout, and the export you get on the way out is not a working site.

Squarespace typical pain

Where it gets heavy

  • Template-based: your layout is bounded by the template you pick
  • Heavy pages, mobile Lighthouse often in the 40 to 70 range
  • Subscription forever, and repriced without warning. Stop paying and the site goes dark
  • Export gives you text and blog posts, not your images, styling or a working site
WebForger relief

What changes when it is done for you

  • The AI builds to your business, not to a fixed template
  • Static HTML on Cloudflare. Lighthouse 100 from day one
  • One-off setup, then simple ongoing care quoted by tier, cancel anytime and keep the site
  • Export your full site as HTML. The site is yours, not rented
What changed in July 2026

The subscription went up, then the email said sorry.

On July 17, 2026 Squarespace emailed subscribers about increases of up to 26 percent. Annual Basic moved from $16 to $19 a month and annual Core from $23 to $29. One week later a second email called it an internal error that misapplied prices on certain plans, and issued revised figures per account. Prices still went up.

Context helps. Squarespace has been owned by private equity firm Permira since a $7.2 billion take-private closed in October 2024 and the company delisted from the NYSE. Price rises after a leveraged buyout are a standard part of the model, not a conspiracy theory.

WebForger vs Squarespace

Same beautiful result. Faster, and actually yours.

Squarespace is genuinely good-looking. The trade is speed, ownership and lock-in. Here is the honest split for a business that depends on its site.

How it works

Three steps to a finished site, no learning curve.

No tool to master, no template to fight. You describe the business, you get a website.

Step 1 — 10 minutes

Describe your business

Tell the agent what you do, who you serve and the look you want. Or point it at an existing site to match.

  • No design or code skills
  • Plain-English brief
  • Free preview before you pay anything
Step 3 — 5 minutes

Approve and go live

Review the preview, request edits in plain English, connect your domain. You only pay when you approve.

  • Private preview URL
  • Inline editor for any change
  • Bring your own domain
Done for you, end to end

You describe the business once. The agent ships the rest.

No design tool to learn, no deploy pipeline, no template to bend. You get a finished, fast, static website you can edit in plain English, and a free preview before you pay anything.

Moving off Squarespace

Six steps, in this order.

Squarespace export gives you words and posts, not a working site. So leaving is a rebuild, and the order matters more than the speed.

  1. Check your renewal date first. It sets your deadline and tells you whether you have eleven months or eleven days.
  2. Export the XML for your text and posts, and treat it as the source of truth for copy.
  3. Download your images separately. They are not in the export.
  4. Inventory your live URLs before you cancel anything. Every page that ranks needs to keep its path or get a 301 redirect.
  5. Rebuild on something you hold, where the output is a set of files rather than a page rendered from someone else's database.
  6. Repoint DNS once the replacement is verified, and cancel last. Never first. Your Squarespace site goes dark the moment the subscription lapses.

Steps 2 to 5 are what our free rebuild preview does for you.

No surprises

What you keep, regardless of outcome.

Free preview first

You see the full site before paying anything. If it is not right, you walk away owing nothing.

30-day satisfaction guarantee

If the site is not clearly faster and easier to manage than the alternative, we refund what you have paid. No runaround.

You own the output

Export the site as HTML at any time. No subscription wall, no lock-in. The site is yours to keep or hand to another developer.

FAQ

Honest answers to the things Squarespace owners actually ask.

Is WebForger cheaper than Squarespace?
Different model. WebForger Pro is a one-off setup quoted to your scope, with 1 year of hosting and care included, then simple ongoing care quoted by tier. Squarespace is a subscription that runs forever. Year one is cheaper on Squarespace; over a few years WebForger pulls ahead. The bigger difference is that you own an exportable site at the end, not a rented one.
Will I lose my SEO rankings if I switch?
The goal is the opposite. We keep titles, meta, headings and internal links, map important URLs and set 301 redirects for anything that changes. Faster pages and better mobile usually move ranking up. We send a side-by-side Lighthouse and SEO report before launch.
Can I export my site from Squarespace first?
Only partially. Squarespace's XML export covers basic pages plus one blog page and its posts. It excludes images and video, product pages, album and event pages, index pages, folders, audio, video and product blocks, and all style changes and custom CSS. You get your content, not a working site. Our migration crawls your public pages and rebuilds them as static HTML using your existing copy and images.
Why is WebForger faster than Squarespace?
Squarespace ships a heavy templated runtime to every visitor. WebForger outputs plain static HTML on Cloudflare's edge, so there is far less to download. That is the main reason mobile Lighthouse jumps from the 40 to 70 range to 100.
Will my site still look as polished as a Squarespace template?
Yes. The agent designs a clean, modern layout with original AI-generated images, written copy and proper typography. You get the polish without being boxed into one template everyone else uses.
Can I keep my Squarespace domain?
Yes. If your domain is registered through Squarespace you can transfer it out, or if it is at another registrar we simply update the DNS records. Your domain stays yours.
Will the site be editable after migration?
Yes. Inline editor in your dashboard, edit any text, swap any image, regenerate any section with AI. No template blocks to wrestle.
What about Squarespace commerce?
Light to medium Stripe checkout flows are supported. Large catalogues with complex inventory and shipping rules are out of scope; for that, stay on Squarespace Commerce or use Shopify. We are honest about the line.
How much did Squarespace prices go up in 2026?
On July 17, 2026 Squarespace notified subscribers of increases of up to 26 percent. Annual Basic went from $16 to $19 a month, annual Core from $23 to $29 and annual Plus from $39 to $49, with Advanced unchanged. Monthly billing moved less. A week later Squarespace emailed a correction blaming an internal error that misapplied prices on certain plans and issued revised figures per account. Prices still went up.
Who owns Squarespace now?
Private equity firm Permira. The $7.2 billion all-cash take-private closed on October 17, 2024 and Squarespace delisted from the NYSE, with founder Anthony Casalena staying on as CEO. Permira raised its offer from $44 to $46.50 per share after Institutional Shareholder Services said the original bid undervalued the business. Price increases after a leveraged buyout are a standard part of the model.
